Survey and research of the Pale of Ashdown Forest has been undertaken as part of the Historic Environment Awareness Project, run by East Sussex County Council's Archaeology team. The Pale was built more than 700 years ago, its purpose to enclose the ancient deer park for 23 miles with variations of a bank and ditch. The Pale has dictated the present course of roads and boundaries in many places around the Forest. The report on this fascinating study can be downloaded below.
