Introduction to bronze casting at Forest Garden

Location: Forest Garden, Shovelstrode, East Grinstead, Sussex
A one day course which will give you a background to the prehistoric art of bronze making and some practical experience. We will look at the distant history of bronze, metallurgy, techniques and we will handle ore, copper, tin and some original artifacts. There will be instruction on mould making and participants will make up their own mould. During the day we will use a furnace in the woods using original charcoal techniques. We will undertake a number of castings of molton metal into the moulds we have prepared. Your instructor Rod Hughes, originally an engineer is expert in a number of materials and manufacturing techniques. Rod has worked under world renown bronze swordsmith, Neil Burridge and has recreated prehistoric artifacts for Butser Ancient Farm, including original jewellery, swords axes and spears.
