Lambs Larder, a successful and well known village shop based in Bells Yew Green, is trying to restore the successful 1950's idea of the mobile shop. Peter Lamb, who owns the business, already visits Cowden near Edenbridge in Kent and plans to shortly take the shop to Five Ashes in East Sussex. Plans are afoot to expand to Stonegate and Flimwell and another 15 villages around Kent and Sussex.
Peter hopes to fill the gap left by the closure of so many convenience and village stores by giving people the opportunity to buy food and other goods from a van in the centre of the village. Not only will this help the local villagers who want to be able to walk to a shop but it will help local businesses too - as Lambs Larder concentrates on selling local products from local producers.
Mobile shops were a popular feature around rural areas in the 1950s and revived could help local businesses and shoppers alike.
