Learning through theatre

History was brought to life in the Weald Forest Ridge throught the scripting and performance of five site-specific theatrical trails by The Company - a Sussex-based theatre company that brings accessible, quality theatre into the heart of rural communities in Sussex and Kent

The Company's performances in 2010 and 2011 were:

  • "Ostrich Feathers" at Buchan Country Park, Crawley.
  • "Warren Broadwater: Man of Mystery" at the RSPB's Broadwater Warren nature reserve.
  • "The Jigsaw Puzzle": a community play performed in the centre of West Hoathly alongside the Stoneland Players amateur theatre group.
  • "Where be Dragons" - a fun, family-focused play at St Leonard's Forest, exploring the site's well-known dragon myth.
  • "Up in Smoke": the "play on a moving steam train" at the Spa Valley Railway, Tunbridge Wells .

In total, there were 25 performances of the 5 plays, with over 1,200 adults and children enjoying the fun and informative trails.

Reviews from audience members were especially positive, such as:

“If someone had just given me a piece of information about the original owners of Buchan Park, I would have never have engaged with the characters as much as I did when they were brought to life in the Ostrich feathers production.”
