Learning about woodland archaeology

surveying_woodland_archaeology_forestry_commissionThe Weald Forest Ridge is part of one of the best preserved medieval landscapes in Northern Europe. A key project in the Landscape Partnership Scheme has helped us find out more about hidden archaeological and learn more about the landscape.

The Historic Environment Awareness Project

This exciting project explored the archaeological landscape of the Weald Forest Ridge.

A LiDAR (light detection and ranging) survey mapped the area during 2009/10 and images are available to download. The images below show RSPB Broadwater Warren, from the air and then as LiDAR shows it: note the old tracks that show so well on the LiDAR, but are otherwise hidden in the aerial photograph.

Additionally, three toolkits were produced and are available to download. The toolkits cover how to:survey archaeology using LiDAR identify archaeological features; and research site history.
