High Weald

Introduction: Owned and managed by the Forestry Commission, Vinehall Forest is the collective name for a number of smaller woods adjoining each other, including Barnes Wood and Footland Wood.

Location: Either side of B2089 at Vinehall Street, 2.5miles south-east of Robertsbridge and 3 miles north of Battle.

What can I do? Follow the paths - some surfaced others unsurfaced - through the mixed broadleaf and coniferous woodland.

What can I see? A range of different tree species, including beech, birch, oak, sweet chestnut and maturing conifers planted in the 20th century as timber crops. Various woodland butterflies such as silver washed fritillaries and skippers and be seen through spring and summer.

What can I hear? Listen out for the tapping of the great spotted woodpecker, and especially its spring-time drumming.
