High Weald

Introduction: A 186 ha (460 acres) predominantly coniferous woodland, with heathy open areas adjoining wet flushes and streams. Owned by the Forestry Commission, the Wood has historic connections to Battle Abbey. Sweet chestnut is still coppiced - continuing the Wood's link to local industry.

Location: Car park access from Marley Lane, 0.5mile east of Battle, heading towards Sedlescombe.

What can I do? Walk or cycle the wide well-managed paths throughout the woodland. The Wood is particularly popular with dog walkers.

What can I see? Look out for badger, deer and many common butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies.

What can I hear? Nightjar, tree pipit and crossbills can be heard and seen in the woodlands
