High Weald

L_035526This is a business in its infancy, the family having taken over in April 2012! Vanessa grew up in the area and they have returned to the area after 10 years in Bath, operating a cafe & starting a family. Keen to run a business more conducive to family life, they stumbled across Riverside Cottage & knew it was for them.

The campsite offers 15 pitches, 8 with hook-up, on a level, tree-lined field. They heartily believe in campfires and have firepits, wood and even marshmallows should you not have your own! Sit back, relax and watch the Kent and East Sussex Railway steam trains as they chug by quarter of a mile away.

Take a ferry ride to Bodiam Castle - there are three return cruises along the River Rother a day. Take time to explore the spectacular and moated medieval castle and grounds, a perfect place to picnic. Or why not hire a rowing boat and amble up the River Rother at your own leisure.

Alex is Captain of the ferry and is learning and sharing knowledge about all sorts aboard the Dannie Lee! There is an abundance of wildlife along the 4.5m stretch of river between the boating station and Bodiam Castle and Alex is getting good at spotting the various birds nesting in the area. There are owl nesting boxes along the way and a family of resident kingfishers, not to mention John the Swan and many more.

Alex is particularly interested in history and is enjoying finding out as much as he can about the castle and Newenden - Did you know that Newenden is the birthplace of cricket?!

In the future, they intend to become more self sufficient and have an area of pasture just about big enough to introduce a few pigs and some chickens. This will provide them with meat and eggs; the eggs which could also feed the campers. Another plot has been ear marked as a vegetable patch and they want to use both of these areas to help educate visitors, who might not otherwise have the chance, by getting them actively involved with looking after the animals and helping to manage the vegetables.
