solar_panels_skinnersSkinners' School in Royal Tunbridge Wells has a programme of education by sustainable development. By actively involving pupils in issues of sustainability throughout their time at school, Skinners' hopes to produce knowledgeable, confident citizens who can make value judgements about issues such as 'Sustainability', 'Food Miles', 'Climate Change', 'Energy Conservation', 'Waste Management', 'Green Enterprise' etc.

The education programme aims are:

  • To create a whole school approach to 'Sustainable Issues' that is cross-curricular and cross phase.
  • To actively promote the concepts of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Repair throughout the school by using Eco-Reps to deliver assemblies, host meetings, prepare notice boards etc.
  • To reach out to our 4 partner primary and 2 partner secondary schools and share good practice with them.
  • To create and maintain active links with businesses and individuals who are working in local sustainable enterprises, and show pupils that there are good careers available in Environmental technology. This is achieved through the installation of photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and water saving devices as well as doing practical conservation projects in their own school grounds and at partnership sites such as Oakley School.
  • By actively involving pupils in issues of sustainability throughout their time at school, Skinners' hopes to produce knowledgeable, confident citizens who can make value judgements about issues such as 'Sustainability', 'Food Miles', 'Climate Change', 'Energy Conservation', 'Waste Management', 'Green Enterprise' etc

For more information about how to set up and implement an Eco-School Action Plan, Mark Moody (Head of Biology) will be happy to share the school's experience and explain the technology and steps they have taken.
