Pond management

The Kent, Sussex and Surrey High Weald has one of the highest concentrations of ponds in the South East of England. Pond numbers were at their peak in 1840 when most of the human activity that led to their creation began to decline. There are 13,408 mapped ponds in the area, largely associated with the Wadhurst Clay, approximately 9 per kilometre square. Across Britain, around 75% have been lost in the last 100 years.
