Owners of woodland around Heathfield can hire horses to help with timber extraction through local company Sussex Horse Logging. Horse logging is ideal for steep or difficult terrain that is hard to access with machinery. It also has less impact on sensitive woodland areas, creates less "mess" and gives the public an opportunity to see traditional methods of forestry. Over the wetter winter months, when ground conditions make heavy machinery particularly destructive, logging horses are in their element.
