High Weald

Children donned their wellies and got back to nature at Beckley CE School, to celebrate their new status as High Weald Heroes. Students marked the occasion by posing with their commemorative High Weald Heroes plaque, along with school’s very own chickens – which was apt, as the children had spent the morning talking about the importance of farming on the High Weald.

Pupils discovered how farming in the High Weald has changed through time, which seasonal vegetables are grown locally and saw a short film about how Saxon pig drovers created the sunken paths found criss crossing the High Weald’s ancient woodland.  Children from the school will be going on a ‘Welly Walk’ later in the spring with the aim of learning even more about their unique local landscape.
