The 145 kilometre/95 mile High Weald Landscape Trail was developed by the High Weald Joint Advisory Committee in the 1990's and is a great way of exploring the area's varied landscapes. Starting at Horsham, the Trail meanders through St Leonard's Forest - a remnant of one of the area's four great medieval forests; travels through the historic town of East Grinstead before running parellel with the River Medway; passes the impressive sandrock outcrops south of Tunbridge Wells before entering Kent and linking the hill-top villages of Goudhurst, Cranbrook, Benenden, Rolvenden and Tenterden; it then enters Sussex again to cross the windswept floodplains of the Rivers Rother and Tillingham before ending near the coast at Rye.
Feedback from walkers suggest that it is one of the most popular, though lesser known, long distance routes in the South East; its interest lying in the suprises found around every corner.
The first guidebook, produced in 1999, is out of print and the new online guide has been produced by the HIgh Weald Joint Advisory Committee as a replacement. The Guide has been split into sections to make downloading easier.
